Crystal Bridges – Fantastic Art Surrounds Eureka Springs

January 30th, 2014 by Sam Feldman

It’s been almost 2 1/2 years since Crystal Bridges first opened in nearby Bentonville, AR, but the response from the world has been incredible. When Crystal Bridges was first proposed, annual attendance was estimated at 150,000 to 300,000 guests. Since its opening on 11/11/11, the museum’s attendance has far surpassed that, to welcome more than 650,000 visitors in its first year. During the week of August 12, 2013, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art welcomed its one-millionth visitor.

Built by Alice Walton, daughter of Wal-Mart’s founder, Sam Walton, the museum is sponsored by Wal-Mart and has free admission to view its permanent collection, which is open year-round. Traveling exhibits (such as last year’s Norman Rockwell exhibit) is an additional cost. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and on Thanksgiving and Christmas. The grounds are open daily and if you are there at sunrise or sunset, be sure to visit the Skyspace for an unique experience.

Just a short 1-hour drive from Eureka Springs, AR, (which in itself has incredible art galleries of its own) Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art has world-class art that covers the walls of a unique and artistic building, designed by architect Moshe Safdie. It is designed to be at one with the surrounding landscape and includes gorgeous outdoor trails and outdoor art.

Crystal BridgesThere is some incredible art from the 1600′s, 1700′s and 1800′s that is our favorites. There is also a very modern section, where you can view Andy Warhol’s Dolly Parton and Jackson Pollock’s Reclining Woman. There are incredible sculptures, as well, both inside and outside.

The museum itself will take quite a bit of your day, but if you’re visiting during beautiful weather, you have to spend some time out on the walking trails. There are more than 3.5 miles of trails that wind through the Museum’s 120-acre site, providing guests with access to the beautiful Ozark landscape.
