Yet Another New Murder Mystery Story in Eureka Springs, Arkansas!

March 11th, 2012 by Sam Feldman

We love our Murder Mystery Weekends so much – and guests do, too – that we keep writing new ones! Our Murder Mystery author- extraordinary (Jeff) is just finishing up “The Noble Experiment”, a mystery that takes place during Prohibition.

Eureka Springs, Arkansas, has an interesting history during Prohibition, with lots of gangsters and illegal activity. So…what better story to have as a backdrop to a new murder mystery?

Synopsis:  Mob bosses; agents from the U.S. Bureau of Investigation, Federal Prohibition Enforcement Agency and State Police; federal, state and local politicians; and concerned citizens have gathered at the invitation of one of the nation’s most infamous “bootleggers”.
In an effort to spare the revered and sacrosanct resort of Eureka Springs from the horrendous illegal alcohol-fueled violence that has plunged New York, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Chicago into bloody chaos, a lottery has been proposed that will award the winner exclusive rights to the importation of prohibited goods into the resort town.
But before the lottery can be held, a heinous crime occurs that threatens to plunge the peaceful Ozarks into outright war.

Who dies and who did it?

With characters like “Hudson Duster” – also known as “Two Gun” – (Chief Financial Officer of the Irish Syndicate), “Ostap Filkowski” – AKA “One eye” – (2nd in command of Kielbasa Posse), or “Krzysztof Sprysak” (say that one three times real fast) – AKA “Clown Shoes” (Head bookie for Kielbasa Posse) – how can you not have fun ?

The inaugural weekend for this exciting new mystery is March 30 & 31st, 2012 – which is already booked up! But we look forward to the next MM weekend, which will be posted on our website soon (most likely in the middle of June). So watch for the date – or give us a call to put you on a wait list. Date will be posted this next week.

Until then – always keep an eye on us here in Eureka Springs – because there’s always murder afoot!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

8th Annual Chocolate Lovers’ Festival in Eureka Springs Arkansas!

January 30th, 2012 by Sam Feldman

Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 11, 2012, for chocolate gorging.

There is chocolate sampling all day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults ($6 for children) and worth every penny, because you get to take a box around with you to all the display tables, chow down on samples AND fill up the box for wonderful chocolate to take home. You will see some wonderful displays (great for ideas for weddings and parties) and one of my favorite things in the whole wide-world:  chocolate fountains.

The Chocolate Lovers’ Festival is always planned every year to coincide with Valentine’s Weekend, so what could be more perfect? This is a nationally acclaimed festival, which has been featured in the national media, including Southern Living magazine. On top of that, it has been selected as the second-best attraction for Valentine’s Day in the state of Arkansas!

A complete world of chocolate appreciation will be featured at the 8th Annual Chocolate Lovers’ Festival including cakes, cookies, ice cream, multiple dipping fountains, beverages and more. Chocolate novelty items and body products will be on hand as well.

We will be happy to host you here at the Bridgeford House Bed and Breakfast in Eureka Springs Arkansas – and we will help you eat the chocolate, too, if you just end up with way too much (is there such a thing?) Weather so far this winter has been gorgeous, so come on up to Eureka! Sophie’s waiting in the window!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

French Baked Pancake

January 8th, 2012 by Sam Feldman

Here is an awesome recipe we discovered recently in a Texas B&B cookbook. We served it for the first time over New Year’s weekend and it was fantastic! Try it this winter for a special Sunday morning breakfast.

French Baked Pancake

1 stick (1/2 cup) butter, room temp, plus 3 tb butter, melted
4 tb sugar
3 eggs plus 2 eggs
2 cups flour
1.5 tsp baking powder
1.25 cups milk
3 cups small curd cottage cheese
1 tsp salt
1 21-ounce can blueberry pie filling
3/4 cup blueberry syrup (about 1/2 of a 12-ounce bottle)
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tb powdered sugar
grated zest of 1 orange, for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 9×13-inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Combine the 1 stick of butter and sugar in a large bowl. Add 3 eggs; beat well. Combine flour and baking powder. Mix flour mixture and milk alternately into butter mixture. Pour 1/2 batter in pan.

Mix cottage cheese, 2 eggs, the 3 tbs melted butter and salt in a medium bowl. Spread over the batter in the pan. Top with remaining batter. Bake for 60 minutes or until golden brown.

Mix and heat blueberry pie filling and syrup together in a saucepan to make a blueberry sauce. Mix sour cream, vanilla and powdered sugar together in a small bowl to make a sour cream sauce.

Cut baked pancake into squares. Serve with blueberry sauce and a dollop of sour cream sauce.

DeVito’s of Eureka Springs – You Can’t Beat Great Italian Food!

November 13th, 2011 by Sam Feldman

Right off the bat I can tell you my favorite item at DeVito’s Restaurant in downtown Eureka Springs and you’re going to laugh, but I’m not kidding…trout fingers! Bet you didn’t even know trout had fingers! Honestly, they are a wonderful appetizer of crispy, boneless strips of trout with a seasoned cornmeal coating and served with a smoky dill sauce – they are just awesome! Check their menu out for main dishes and you will find a huge variety of homemade Italian splendor, not the least of which is their trout dishes that they are famous for. Owner James DeVito continues a tradition begun by his family back in 1956 and the trout are served fresh from his family’s trout farm. Try this on for size: Pesto Trout Parmesan…or Lemon Trout…or Chargrilled Trout – okay, they’re all good. You get the point.

However, let’s not forget we are here for classic Italian – how about Spaghetti, Ravioli or Fettuccine? Start with that base and pick a sauce or meat to go on top:  Pesto, meatballs, Italian sausage – how about fresh cream, butter and Parmesan cheese over your fettuccine? I think ’nuff said.

DeVito’s has a full bar, of course – and a huge selection of wines! This is a perfect place to bring someone special, order a lovely bottle of wine and propose to her right there. James and his lovely wife, Teresa, will take very good care of you. Then go put your new fiance on a carriage ride right through downtown Eureka Springs… well, you get the idea. DeVitos’ has a lovely intimate atmosphere for that kind of thing, plus, coming in 2012, they will add 4-story high rooftop dining overlooking East Mountain for some incredible views! So add that to your to-do list the next time you come to Eureka – hopefully visiting our Arkansas bed and breakfast here at the Bridgeford House. (You know how lonely our Mini Schnauzer, Sophie, gets for company.) And yes, of course you can walk to DeVito’s from here!

Warmest regards,

Sophie looking for guests to arrive

Gaskins Cabin Steak House – Log Cabin Style!

September 12th, 2011 by Sam Feldman

One of the best restaurants in Eureka Springs is the Gaskins Cabin Steak House – about 3 miles north of Eureka on Hwy 23. This authentic log cabin was built in 1864 by a well-known bear hunter and one of the area’s earliest settlers, John Gaskins. He lived there with his wife and 11 children! (We can imagine “time out” for those kids – threaten ‘em with a bear!)

Gaskins Cabin was a gathering place. The Gaskins family always welcomed train-travelers. After they unloaded from the Gaskins Switch train depot, visitors would relax in the Gaskins’ home while waiting for family and friends to pick them up and take them to their final destinations. Here, the guest would eat, drink, and share stories of their lives, becoming extended family to the Gaskins. We love this philosophy – just like ours!

Now, 140 years later, Gaskins Cabin is the oldest standing property in Carroll County, and it is still a gathering place.

Examples of some of their menu items are Classic Escargot, Atlantic Salmon, Shrimp Scampi and Deep Fried Shrimp. Their steak choices include Filet Mignon, Prime Rib, and Boneless Rib Eye. You will be asked what color you want the center to be and it will be exactly that when you receive it! They also have a great wine list and phenomenal desserts – we bet you can bring dessert back to your room if you’re too full of steak; we have utensils for you in your room for just such an occasion.

Okay, we admit that this is one of the very few places you really can’t walk to from Bridgeford House Bed & Breakfast, but it’s well worth the short drive. And no charge for parking there, either!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Ride the Rails in Eureka!

July 23rd, 2011 by Sam Feldman

One of the many fun things to do in Eureka Springs is ride the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway. The collection of vintage rolling stock at ES&NA is one of the Ozarks’ largest, and all the authentic railroad memorabilia is there to re-create the turn-of-the-century era and give modern visitors a taste of how it was when rail service brought the first visitors to Eureka Springs in 1883. (Our original Murder Mystery story is based on the arrival of the railroad in Eureka Springs and it’s being offered to folks that want to come have a wildly fun weekend on August 26th & 27th.)

One of the nicest ways to experience this nostalgic 4-1/2 mile journey out in the beautiful Ozark mountains is to take either a lunch or dinner train. The lunch train departs at 12 noon, May through October, and gives you a main choice of beef stroganoff, chicken salad with fresh fruit, or a hot deli sandwich. The dinner train departs at 5:00 and gives you a main choice of baked chicken breast (“Chicken Eurekan”), Chef’s prime rib (“The Conductor”) or Rainbow Trout Almondine (“The City of New Orleans”). Great sides accompany both lunch and dinner – you do need to call ahead and make a reservation and let them know which choice you would like. The food is quite good and you eat while the train is chugging out into the woods – really makes you feel as if you have gone back in time! There is a special dessert that you have to see to believe.

The railroad’s season runs from April through October (with a  limited schedule in April). Great time to come out and hop on is in the fall when the leaves are changing! Bring your camera.

We’re not far from the railroad here at the Bridgeford House B&B and we can hear the train whistle quite often. Now that brings back neat childhood memories!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!
