Christmas Time in Eureka Springs, AR

October 29th, 2013 by Sam Feldman

We’re writing this just as the fall color is at its peak – we cannot describe to you how gorgeous it is outside our window right now! But as this season blends into the next, we turn our thoughts to holiday time. There is nothing more beautiful at Christmas time than Eureka Springs. Most of the town has their lights up starting around November 15th (us included, barring any last minute delays), so taking a carriage ride at this time of the year is magical.

Santa comes to Basin Park as early as November 29 and for the entire month of December, you can visit the Christmas Forest at the Crescent Hotel (we always recommend popping into the Crescent for a ghost tour anyway).

The 42nd Annual St. James Episcopal Church Silver Tea is on December 5 – a seasonal favorite! And don’t miss the Christmas Parade on Friday, December 6th, one of the best holiday parades we’ve ever seen. There will be all kinds of Christmas downtown activities from December 6-14, so be sure to check here for the schedule.

A very popular holiday activity is the Candlelight Tour of Homes, put on by the Preservation Society. You get to see inside some of these gorgeous Victorian homes, your only chance all year long, on Saturday, December 7th. And the next weekend is another great tour, the Annual Sweet Treats B&B Cookie Tour, Saturday, December 14th. Yours truly, the Bridgeford House Bed and Breakfast, always participates in this tour every year.

December 7-13 is the 14th Annual “Christmas at The Crescent”. They really dress to the nines at that beautiful historic hotel just up the mountain from us, in true Victorian style, and it’s just a short walk from your room here at the B&B.

Throughout November and December, the shops downtown have all kinds of sales going on, so this is the time to come! Get in the holiday spirit with a Christmas time visit to Eureka Springs, AR.

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – (with Sophie and her new little “sister”, Fiona!)

New Year’s in Eureka Springs, AR

December 11th, 2011 by Sam Feldman

Believe it or not, 2012 is almost here! 2011′s been tough on a lot of folks, so 2012 needs to come in with a lot of optimism and good cheer. Come spend it with us at the Bridgeford House, our Arkansas bed and breakfast!

Celebrate New Year's in Eureka Springs!

We will be here to take care of you! On Saturday, New Year’s Eve, we’ll have hot hors d’oeuvres and wine available from 5 p.m to 8 p.m., while visiting with the innkeepers and other guests. We’ll provide hats and noise-makers for you to take to parties downtown. Breakfast Sunday morning will be set for 9:30, rather than 9:00, with Mimosas for those folks still celebrating the arrival of 2012. And we’ll extend checkout on Sunday until 12:00, rather than 11:00, so your first day of the new year won’t have to be a rush! What more could you ask for? A two-night minimum is required, so that you have plenty of time to celebrate the coming of the new year.

There is usually lots of parties going on in Eureka Springs, with the majority of them being walkable from our inn. There are usually parties at the Pied Piper, Chelsea’s, Eureka Live, Rowdy Beaver and I can’t imagine our newest venue, the Voulez-Vous Lounge, won’t be having something outrageous – they’re great fun! And there’s always a great 60-70s type party usually at the convention center, behind the Inn of the Ozarks. If you want something quieter, no problem, most restaurants will all be open for a nice dinner out.

So come have fun and let your worries go – toast in the New Year in Eureka Springs, AR!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

The Secret Season

December 12th, 2010 by Sam Feldman

The Christmas parade is done, the Historic Home tour was fabulous (but wrapped up until next year), the Sweet Treats Tour was a great success yesterday but there is nothing left but crumbs…and the Christmas shopping is starting to wind down. So what’s next? How about just some good old-fashioned hanging out and resting?

Curl up before the fire with a good book

Winter is the Secret Season in Eureka Springs. No crowds, no traffic (no motorcycles!), no noise, nothing but the beautiful mountains and some time alone to relax and refresh. We have lots of books, games, puzzles, magazines and movies. We have fireplaces and whirlpool baths to keep you warm. We have coffee and cocoa in the rooms, popcorn and sweet treats to snack on, and a fresh hot breakfast every morning. Come on, you know you want to do it.

The parlor is full of places to cozy up and books, magazines, puzzles, movies...

This season is a lot of our guests’ favorite. So come find us here and settle in for a rest…Sophie will be glad to cuddle up with you.

Cold and frosty outside, warm and cozy inside!

Merry Christmas!

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!
P.S. Winter rates are starting now – $20 – $30 off per night!

Even Santa Shops in Eureka Springs!

November 21st, 2010 by Sam Feldman

And you thought we were done talking about holiday happenings in Eureka Springs, AR…but we haven’t talked about the great Christmas shopping in the historic downtown! And this year there is so much going on, it needed a blog all by itself.

First of all, there is once again the Win A Window Contest: Nov. 15 – Dec. 15
The Annual Win a Window contest is supported by Eureka Springs’ retail shops! Contestants try to guess the total amount of all the gifts in the Win A Window window across from the courthouse. The one closest wins the whole thing! You can cross everyone off your holiday shopping list. Come see the window this winter and enter for a chance to win!

And new this year, especially for kids, Find The Elves Downtown: Nov. 26, 5-7pm, Basin Spring Park
Where are those darn elves hiding? You and your family are invited to search through downtown to find live elves! Each elf will punch your Elf Card for the chance to win a free portrait session with Santa. Every participant will get prizes from the elves and receive a discount on their portrait with Photo with Santa. Come find the 7 Elves downtown with your family!

And don’t forget Santa in the Park: Nov. 26, 5-7pm, Basin Spring Park
The Chamber of Commerce brings Jolly Old St. Nick to Basin Park to hear their holiday wishes. Now this is done all by Jeff’s staff and very often there are elf costumes involved here, too…

This was a hit last year: Downtown Living Windows: Dec. 3, 3-5:30pm, Spring & Main St.
Windows downtown will come alive with live actors right before the Christmas Parade. Celebrate the winter holidays with these living postcards sure to delight your whole family.

Don’t forget Eureka Springs Christmas Parade: Dec. 3, 6pm, Downtown
This night parade sparkles to the delight of children of all ages. Hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, the parade attracts floats, bands, and groups from all over the area ready to show their holiday spirit. It’s like a Norman Rockwell painting!

Photos with Santa: Dec. 4, 11 & 18, 1-3pm, Basin Park
Santa will be in the park with Old Time Photo taking amazing photos! No Christmas photo is more special than one snapped in Basin Spring Park with Santa. Kids, families, couples, brides and pets are all welcome to sit on the big red lap!

And remember, you can walk to the Christmas Forest Tree Lighting: Dec. 4th 6pm, Crescent Hotel from the Bridgeford House B&B for the
Christmas Trees within the Forest of the Crescent Hotel gardens. They’ll be decorated by area nonprofit organizations. Come vote for your favorite and celebrate the season by sharing the vision of the holidays through the trees!

Santa’s Sunday Brunch: Dec. 5, 9:30am-2pm Crescent Hotel
This annual event is a highlight of families throughout the area! Sitting with Santa as you enjoy the delicious Crescent Hotel brunch is a season special moment. Make this a family tradition!

Christmas at the Queen Anne Mansion

October 24th, 2010 by Sam Feldman

Come celebrate an authentic Victorian Christmas at the Queen Anne Mansion! This year will be the inaugural holiday season for the $4 million newly-renovated mansion that sits at the top of the entrance to our lovely historic downtown. As described by the Queen Anne Mansion folks themselves, “Smells of evergreen and spices set a festive stage for garland, wreaths, bows and beading. Delicate ornaments, richly carved woodwork, and jewel colored stained glass sparkle in firelight and candlelight creating a feast for the eyes.  Guests are invited to a Victorian Christmas with refreshments and live music in a festive atmosphere. Victorian Christmas decor adorns authentic 19th century furnishings in this 1891 mansion.”

And to start your holiday shopping out right, visit their gorgeous gift shop while you’re there:

Dates for this fabulous tour are November 27th, December 4th and December 11th. Tickets are $25 for the candlelight tour and starts at 5 p.m.

Eureka Springs will be beautiful during the holiday season, starting around mid-November and of course the shopping will be wonderful! Come visit us here and see wonderful lights, our very popular Christmas parade (Friday, December 3), the annual Candlelight Tour of Homes (December 4) and the 4th annual Sweet Treats Cookie Tour (December 11).

You will really believe you have stepped back in time for a truly Victorian Christmas!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Eat Your Way Through Eureka Springs

October 17th, 2010 by Sam Feldman

It’s almost time for our annual Sweet Treats Cookie and Candy Tour! Come join us here at the Bridgeford House Bed and Breakfast for the weekend of December 10th & 11th, 2010, and participate in an exciting tour of eight historic bed and breakfasts here in Eureka Springs. All will be dressed to the nines in Christmas holiday splendor – great for taking decorating ideas home! At each inn you will be greeted with smiling innkeepers handing you a sample of each of their two sweet treats – candy or cookies or some other sugar-laced concoction – and their recipes to take home! Guaranteed to gain several pounds – unless you skip the trolley and walk to all the inns, which is definitely possible.

Here at the Bridgeford House, we again offer our weekend package so that not only can you enjoy the sweet treats, you can enjoy some holiday shopping and some holiday relaxing, too! For just an add-on cost of $55 to the cost of your two-night stay in the room of your choice (depending on availability), we’ll provide two tickets to the tour, two trolley tickets (for the lazy folks), and two elegant Christmas ornaments for a keepsake. Of course you will also receive our full-size, four-course breakfast each morning, our Sweet Treats samples and recipes, hot chocolate, plus all the usual treats you’ll find on your bed each afternoon! (No, we’re not talking about Sophie, we’re talking about more food!)

And each ticket holder will have a chance to win one of three $100 gift certificates to be used at the tour inn of your choice for lodging (to be used by June 30, 2011).

The tour is from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th, and tickets are $20 each. It is not necessary to book a stay to do the tour – just call us for tour tickets!

Warmest regards,

Jeff and Nadara (Sam) Feldman – and Sophie, too!

Eureka Springs, AR, 3rd Annual Sweet Treats Tour

December 15th, 2009 by Sam Feldman

This past weekend we saw our local B&B group’s 3rd annual cookie and treats tour successfully fill the bellies of a lot of visitors! Ten gorgeous inns (including yours truly, Bridgeford House B & B) were open to ticket holders to come through each inn to view all the lovely Christmas decorations, munch on cookies and candy (two different ones per inn), collect those recipes, drink hot chocolate, cider or coffee, shake out their umbrellas (rain did not deter them – sugar can be a very strong motivator!) and in our case, play with Sophie. Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves and we had six guests staying with us that participated in the tour and in our special package that we provided, which included not only the treats here at our inn but tickets to the entire tour, tickets to travel to the other inns on the trolley, keepsake ornaments and of course two nights lodging and all that comes with that. Our group was just great and really seemed to enjoy themselves; two of the rooms were return guests that we always enjoy!

Christmas setting

For those who couldn’t make it, here is one of our recipes:

Chocolate Highlander Cookie Bars

1 cup softened butter (2 sticks, 1/2 pound)
1/2 cup powdered sugar (no lumps)
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups flour (don’t need to sift)

4 beaten eggs
1 cup melted butter, cooled to room temp. (2 sticks, 1/2 pound)
1 cup white sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup flour (no need to sift)
2-1/2 cups chocolate chips

1/3 cup powdered sugar to sprinkle on top of pan

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream butter with 1/2 cup powdered sugar and salt. Add flour and mix well. Pat it out in a greased 9-inch by-13-inch pan with your fingers.
Bake at 350 degrees F. for 15 minutes. That makes the shortbread crust.
Mix eggs with melted butter and white sugar. Add baking powder, salt and flour, and mix thoroughly. Melt the chocolate chips in a small double boiler, a pan over hot water on the stove, or nuke them for 3 minutes in the microwave on high (be sure to stir to get all lumps out).
Add the melted chocolate chips to your bowl and mix thoroughly.
Pour this mixture on top of the shortbread and tip the pan so it covers all of the shortbread crust. Stick it back in  the oven and bake for another 25 minutes. Remove and sprinkle on additional powdered sugar.

Let it cool thoroughly and cut into brownie-sized bars. You can refrigerate these, but cut them before you do. (They are pretty solid when they’re cold.)

Eat and enjoy – we only go around once in life and every now and then, treat yourself to a stay at a B & B!

Warmest regards,

Sam & Jeff (and Sophie, too!)
